Spring Cleaning Guide: Cleaning and Maintaining Blinds, Curtains and Shutters

Spring cleaning is where window furnishings either stay crisp for years or start to look tired early. The goal is not deep cleaning every weekend. It’s a simple schedule and correct methods per material.

Manufacturers consistently recommend basic routines like dusting and spot cleaning with lukewarm water and mild detergent where appropriate and following the fabric care label for curtains. 

The golden rules

• Start dry (dust first). Wet cleaning on dusty fabric turns dust into grime.
• Use mild detergent, not harsh cleaners.
• Don’t soak fabrics that are not designed for soaking (especially many roller/roman fabrics). Always follow product-specific instructions. 

Roller blinds
Weekly:

• light dusting with a duster or soft cloth

Monthly:

• spot clean marks with a damp sponge and lukewarm water; mild detergent if needed; dry gently 

Avoid:

• harsh scrubbing and abrasive cleaners (they can damage coatings)

Venetian blinds (aluminium / timber-look)
Weekly:

• close slats and dust; then tilt opposite direction and repeat

Monthly:

• wipe with a damp cloth; keep water minimal on timber components
  General manufacturer guidance emphasises gentle cleaning, brush attachments for vacuuming and avoiding excess moisture on real wood products. 

Roman blinds
Treat romans like a fabric product:

• dust/vacuum gently using a brush attachment
• spot clean carefully; avoid saturating the fabric 

Curtains (sheers and blockouts) Curtains differ by fabric and lining. The care label matters. Curtain care notes specifically advise referring to the care label for cleaning instructions and flags that coated fabrics may need spot cleaning rather than washing. 

Practical approach:

• vacuum with upholstery attachment along hems and leading edges
• wash/dry clean based on care label, not guesswork

 

Plantation shutters (PVC vs timber)
Shutters are usually simple:

• dust regularly
• wipe with a lightly damp cloth if needed
• dry after wiping to avoid moisture sitting on surfaces

Many care guides advise avoiding harsh cleaners (especially bleach) because they can strip paint finishes and keeping water minimal. 

Tracks and hardware (the bit that causes “sticky curtains”)
Every few months:

• check curtain tracks for dust build-up
• check brackets, chains and controls for smooth operation
• keep moving parts clear of grit (particularly near kitchens and sliding doors)
