Child Safety in Window Furnishings: Cordless Options and Practical Tips

Blind and curtain cords are a strangulation hazard. Australian product safety guidance states young children have died in Australian homes from accidents with corded blinds and curtains and children can access cords by climbing on furniture near windows.

This is not a “be careful” issue. It’s regulated.

The Australian safety standard affects installation
Installers must comply with the Competition and Consumer (Corded Internal Window Coverings) Safety Standard 2014. The standard includes requirements such as:

  • fitting a cleat or cord guide correctly
  • ensuring cords cannot form hazardous loops within reach (including specific measurements and height requirements)

The Australian Product Safety site also provides consumer-facing guidance on the risks and safer setups.

Victoria has an extra rental requirement
From 1 December 2025, Consumer Affairs Victoria notes rental properties must have secured cords on internal window coverings to prevent cords forming loops.

This matters if you’re a landlord, property manager, or renter trying to understand what “good enough” looks like.

What “cordless” really means
Cordless options usually include:

  • motorised blinds/curtains (remote/app/voice control)
  • spring-assisted or wand control systems (product dependent)
  • tensioned systems where cords are not accessible or cannot form a hazardous loop (design dependent)

Motorisation has a simple safety benefit: it removes hanging cords from daily use and reduces the chance of cords being left loose.

Practical safety steps in any home (owner-occupier or rental)

  • Keep cots, beds and climbable furniture away from windows and cords. Regulators explicitly warn children climb on furniture to access cords.
  • Use cord cleats/guides correctly and keep cords secured.
  • Don’t remove warning labels/tags supplied with window coverings.

If you’re in a Victorian rental
Consumer Affairs Victoria provides a free curtain and blind cord safety kit for eligible Victorian consumers.
Minimum standards checklists also call out that window coverings must function and maintain privacy and that safety kits can improve cord safety.

1

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Materials

Environmental consciousness is no longer optional—it's essential. Homeowners are increasingly choosing window treatments made from sustainable materials like organic cotton, bamboo, and recycled fabrics. These eco-friendly options don't compromise on style or quality, offering beautiful textures and durability while reducing environmental impact.

2

Smart Home Integration

Motorisation continues to dominate the market, but now with even more sophisticated features. Voice control, app integration, and automated schedules based on sunrise and sunset times are becoming standard expectations. The convenience of controlling your blinds from bed or while away from home is transforming how we interact with our living spaces.

3

Layered Window Treatments

The layered look is making a strong comeback. Combining sheer curtains with blockout options, or pairing blinds with decorative drapes, creates depth and versatility. This approach allows you to adjust light levels and privacy throughout the day while adding visual interest to your windows.

4

Bold Colors and Patterns

While neutrals remain popular, 2025 is seeing a surge in bold, statement-making window treatments. Rich jewel tones, dramatic patterns, and textured fabrics are being used to create focal points and express personality. Don't be afraid to make your windows a feature rather than just a functional element.

5

Minimalist Roller Blinds

Clean lines and simplicity continue to appeal to modern homeowners. Sleek roller blinds in neutral tones complement minimalist interiors while providing excellent functionality. The beauty lies in their simplicity—no fuss, just pure efficiency and style.
